Butte County District Attorney and PG&E Reach $1.5M Settlement for Three of the October 2017 Wildfires

According to an article by the Chico Enterprise-Record, the Butte County District Attorney’s office and PG&E reached a $1.5 million settlement agreement in connection with damage caused to the county by three of the destructive October 2017 wildfires (the La Porte, Cherokee, and Honey Fires).

Per a news release issued by the District Attorney and PG&E, PG&E will be required to fund a new program, called the Enhanced Fire Prevention and Communications Program, in Butte County.  The program is aimed at keeping vegetation away from power lines and reducing the risk of wildfires.  It will be administered by the Butte County Fire Department and paid for by PG&E.  The Chico-Enterprise Record reports that the settlement will fund the salaries of four defensible space inspectors dedicated to inspecting power lines.  The Chico Enterprise-Record notes that according to officials, the possible criminal punishment had a maximum fine of $1000.

The individual lawsuits of residents affected by the La Porte, Cherokee, and Honey Fires will continue separately.
